In June 2020, GE announced that the Haliade-X 12 MW received a provisional type certificate from DNV-GL. This makes it the most powerful turbine in the world, a step closer to full type certification. This is the ‘IECRE Provisional RNA Component Certificate’, which demonstrates that GE’s Haliade-X prototype meets the highest safety and quality standards.

In collaboration with Sif and Pondera, GE has built a prototype of the Haliade-X in the ports of Rotterdam. In January, the turbine was already setting a new record by producing 288 MWh of electricity in 24 hours. The turbine in Rotterdam is part of the type certification for the final roll-out of the new GE’s Haliade-X turbines.

The type certification is required to demonstrate that the new turbine works safely, reliably and according to the requirements. John Lavelle, CEO of Offshore Wind at GE Renewable Energy has stated:
This is a very important milestone for us as it confirms the robustness of our Haliade-X 12 MW design, and gives certainty to our current and future customers who believe in the attributes of our platform. When we introduced the Haliade-X 12 MW we established a new paradigm in the industry, and we will continue to do so by innovating, improving, and introducing new features to our Haliade-X platform, making offshore wind a more affordable and competitive source of renewable energy.

As part of the certification, Dr. Kim Moerk, Executive Vice President for Renewables Certification at DNV GL said:

GE’s Haliade-X 12 MW is a significant breakthrough for the offshore wind industry. Developing new and innovative technology always brings an element of uncertainty and risk. Type certification is a vital measure to demonstrate that new turbines will operate safely, reliably and according to requirements and we are proud to provide our offshore wind expertise to this important new technology development and support our customers enter into new markets.

The certification will continue over the coming months to obtain a full type certificate for the turbine.

Pondera Development and SIF Holding are developing the Haliade-X on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, together with GE Renewable Energy. Pondera made the development of this innovative turbine possible, thanks in part to its extensive knowledge of and years of experience with Dutch laws and regulations for wind energy. Upscaling of (offshore) wind turbines is important to be able to generate more sustainable energy, accelerate the energy transition and thus limit the effects of climate change. The  Haliade-X 12 MW is an important link in this development.

The Haliade-X can generate 46.3 GWh of electricity annually. That is enough power for 15,900 European households and thus will save 28.1 kilotonnes of CO2. From autumn 2019, the Haliade-X will generate sustainable energy on the SIF site on the Maasvlakte.
