Pondera’s Joost Sissingh participated in the Dutch trade mission to the Baltic States. This visit to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania focused on offshore wind energy and took place from 10 to 14 April 2022. Together with a delegation of Dutch companies, Joost visited the capitals of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. A packed programme in which Pondera was able to get to know three different countries, each with their own approach, opportunities and challenges in the field of wind energy development.
The Baltic States have strong ambitions with regard to the realisation of (offshore) wind energy. This ambition is further fuelled by the current situation in Ukraine. The sense of urgency to become independent of oil, gas and electricity from Russia is felt everywhere. A good wind climate (the potential for offshore wind energy within the EEZ zones of the Baltic States is estimated at no less than 26 GW) and the shallow waters make the Baltic States a very suitable area for generating offshore wind energy.
All three countries are currently in a preparatory phase to further develop offshore wind. During the successful trade mission, many contacts were established with governments, grid managers, project developers and local consultancies. There seems to be sufficient interest in deploying Pondera’s specific knowledge and experience for offshore wind and grid connection in the Baltic States. With our expertise in areas such as location studies, environmental impact assessments, tenders, due diligence and technical services, such as wind measurement campaigns and yield calculations, we can help project developers, governments and grid managers to accelerate the energy transition.
