Roy van Alst joined Pondera as a Renewable Energy Consultant in January 2023. He has a technical background in chemistry and sustainability & innovation. His broad background helps him to switch between the technical and policy approach of issues within Pondera. Within the Environment & Spatial Planning team, Roy’s responsibilities include environmental impact assessments, geographic information systems (GIS) and feasibility studies.

Education and employers

After bilingual atheneum, Roy started a BSc Chemistry at Radboud University in Nijmegen in 2017. There he developed an interest and passion for applying scientific knowledge to social issues. Roy followed courses related to environment and sustainability, and during his internship he researched suitable salts for sustainable salt batteries. During this, he completed the world’s first complete phase diagram of sodium iodide (NaI); a salt that could potentially be used in such salt batteries in the future.

In November 2022, Roy completed his MSc in Molecular Chemistry with specialization in Science, Management and Innovation. Here he gained knowledge on sustainability goals, climate, energy modeling and green energy, among others. In his Master’s thesis, he wrote a market analysis and life cycle assessment (LCA) on the market of sustainable wood adhesives, advising a subsidiary of an international waste management company.
