In various projects, Pondera is researching and supervising the application of a system that controls the illumination of wind turbines for aviation, dependent on the presence of aircraft.
Such lighting is required under international aviation conventions. Wind turbines, like other tall objects, are obstacles that must be clearly visible to aviation in all conditions. As a result, the lighting is also visible from the ground and this is undesirable. In principle, the lighting is continuously on, regardless of the presence of aircraft. Since 2010, Pondera has been actively involved in obtaining permission in the Netherlands to make lighting smarter. By switching on the lighting only when there are aircraft approaching, the lighting has to be switched on significantly less often. Pondera is currently involved in exploring potential locations for the radar systems required for radar-based systems and the application for approval from the Dutch aviation authority ILT.
